Hanbei Takenaka (translated as Hanbe Takenaka in Samurai Heroes) is a character introduced in Sengoku Basara 2. Hanbei fights loyally alongside his lord, Hideyoshi Toyotomi.

Description

Hanbei Takenaka is the strategist of Hideyoshi Toyotomi, also a rival of Kojūrō Katakura. He is such a good strategist, that he even anticipated Motonari Mōri's moves.

He usually wears a blue mask covering some parts of his face and has white hair. His weapon is a kansetsuken, an extendable sword which has a great amount of speed along with his movements. His element is darkness.

Gameplay

Hanbei uses a whip-like sword in battle. This allows him to perform quick swings or extend his sword to increase his range and coverage. Considered as one of the most powerful characters in the game, but there are lots of balance fixes on him on Sengoku Basara 4.

Hanbei possess a fairly good attack speed, and movement speed. Some of his skills have fast recovery timing, and some have long recovery. Prior to Sengoku Basara 4, there many useless skills he has, but in Sengoku Basara 4, most of his skills are useful.

Prior to Sengoku Basara 4, Hanbei will always extend his sword on predetermined parts of his S-string and on selected skills.

In Sengoku Basara 4, Hanbei's moveset is slightly altered. The player can now hold the attack of skill button (or button combination) to perform the attack with the sword extended. When extended, his S-string and skills will start up slower, but will have more range. Additionally, the extended version of his skills often function differently from their regular counterpart. However, due to his advantage and even greater attack reach, now Hanbei's damage has been nerfed, and his usual skills like Hanayakani deals lesser damage. But due to dark element characteristics when you put elemental status in your weapons, its not really a trouble. Also his skills, Inochi Taeruyouni are not draining your hit point anymore, and the attack can be used to create a combo, not just sweeping attack to clear path away. However, now the timing is limited to certain extend, same as Uesugi Kenshin Shinsoku.

Because the extended sword follows the same mechanic as Nobunaga's follow-up attacks, players can easily and quickly switch between using Hanbei's regular sword or extended sword, allowing for some flexibility mid-combos (for his S-string at least).

Like a Whisper (Darkness Elemental)

By extending the jointed sword, enemies are pierced and then pulled near. By holding and then releasing the skill button, enemies on the left and right are struck as well.

Brilliantly
[Hanayakani]
Cuts up enemies with a graceful high speed combination. Additional button pressing raises the number of hits. The number of attacks increases after level up.

Easily and Softly
[Amaku Yawarakani]
Surrounding enemies are caught into the attack, and then thrown in midair. At Lv. 2 with the Skill button, and at Lv. MAX, with the normal combo button and additional pressing raises number of hits.

Be engulfed by darkness (Darkness Elemental)
[Yami ni Tsutsumarete]
Raising the sword to the sky, a rain of thorns is created. By charging the skill the number of thorns increases. The skill can be charged more after level up.

Like Vanishing Life
[Inochi Taeruyouni]
Pressing the skill button initiates the high speed movement; every time the normal combo button is pressed, the jointed sword is swung left and right without stopping. While the skill is active, life energy gradually decreases.

Brimming with Anger
[Ikari wo Komete]
For a set time, the number of Hits and Critical ratio go up. However, the received damage greatly increases as well.

Historical information

Hanbei Takenaka

Shigeharu Takenaka (September 27, 1544 – July 6, 1579), who was also known as Hanbei Takenaka initially served the Saito Clan of Mino province, but later plotted an uprising and took over the Saito castle at Mount Inaba. Hideyoshi Toyotomi was so impressed by this tactic that he invited Shigeharu to join his forces as a strategist. Shigeharu made many contributions to Hideyoshi with his exceptional talent in that field.

He died of illness at age 34 during Hideyoshi's attack against the Mōri in the Chūgoku region of Japan, while Miki Castle was being besieged, Shigekado Takenaka, Shigeharu's son and successor, continued to serve Hideyoshi after his father's death. At the Battle of Sekigahara, he fought on the side of Tokugawa Ieyasu and his holdings at Bodaisan were secured. The Takenaka family thus became a family of Hatamoto, and would soon move from their old castle of Bodaisan to the new Iwate castle. The holdings of the Takenaka included Sekigahara Village. In the mid-19th century, Shigeharu's descendant Shigekata Takenaka served as commander of the Tokugawa forces in Fushimi at the Battle of Toba-Fushimi.
