鬼ヶ島に鬼てえのはこの俺よ!
"I am the demon of Onigashima!"
Motochika Chōsokabe is a character who has appeared since the first Sengoku Basara. He is depicted as a pirate leader who likes adventuring.
Description[]
Motochika is portrayed as a mostly purple-clad, muscular man with spiky white hair and a large eyepatch covering his left eye. The sleeves of his extremely short purple coat, which covers his shoulders and upper back, are left unworn; Motochika instead prefers to just leave them flapping around in the wind. Much of his chest is left uncovered, save for two thick straps that criss-cross against his torso and a large collar that covers most of his neck.
Rather than conquering lands, Motochika prefers to explore through the islands and search for treasures. He also cares a great deal about his underlings, and his crew and he share a very strong bond. His crew call him aniki (兄貴, big brother), as a gesture of respect and companionship. He, in turn, refers to the whole of his crew as "mateys." His bond with his crew is especially clear throughout the series' second anime adaptation, Sengoku Basara Judge End, where he initially allies himself with Mitsunari Ishida in order to get revenge against Ieyasu Tokugawa, whom he believed killed off his entire crew.
Motochika is a pirate leader, and the lord of the island Shikoku. He is strongly opposed to anyone who tries to conquer his lands, and has earned himself the nickname "The Demon of Shikoku" through his feats in battle. He also has a rather fierce rivalry with Motonari Mori, and partnership with Ranmaru Mori and Ieyasu (once he was still in the Oda Clan).
After Hideyoshi Toyotomi, the conqueror of the land, was killed by Ieyasu, Shikoku was seemingly attacked by the latter. Ieyasu's supposed army successfully conquered the island, and Motochika had to flee. Motonari advised Motochika to join forces with Mitsunari, who was out for revenge against Ieyasu. Motochika took this advice and joined with Mitsunari in order to avenge his fallen comrades. However, he later found that it was actually Mori Motonari who had instigated the attack against Shikoku.
- Weapon
Motochika fights with an anchor-tipped spear. In Sengoku Basara, he is an NPC who shares his moveset with Toshiie. The weapon as a whole can be used like an axe, but Motochika can also detach the anchor if he so chooses. The anchor can be shot at his opponent, and also pulled back to be reattached to the staff. He can also use his weapon as a vehicle of-sorts, propelling himself through the air whilst standing on the spear staff.

Motochika's special items "King of the Seas" says zenny drops from enemies caught in "Heave Ho", but zenny actually drops from those caught in "Chain Shot".
Historical Information[]
Motochika Chōsokabe (長宗我部元親?, 1538 – July 11, 1599) was a Sengoku period daimyo in Japan. He was the 21st chief of the Chōsokabe clan of Tosa Province (present-day Kōchi Prefecture). He was the son and heir of Kunichika Chōsokabe and his mother was a daughter of the Saitō clan of Mino Province.
In 1575, Motochika was victorious at the Battle of Watarigawa, gaining control of Tosa Province. Over the ensuing decade, he extended his power to all of Shikoku. However, in 1585, Hideyoshi Hashiba (later Toyotomi) invaded that island with a force of 100,000 men, led by Hideie Ukita, Takakage Kobayakawa, Motonaga Kikkawa, Hidenaga Hashiba, and Hidetsugu Hashiba. Motochika surrendered, and forfeited Awa, Sanuki, and Iyo Provinces; Hideyoshi permitted him to retain Tosa.
Under Hideyoshi, Motochika and his son Nobuchika participated in the invasion of neighboring Kyūshū, in which Nobuchika died. In 1590, Motochika led a fleet in the Siege of Odawara, and also fought in the Japanese invasions of Korea in 1592.
Motochika died in 1599 at age 61 at his mansion in Fushimi. His successor was Morichika Chōsokabe.
