"Soldiers and such are, after all, disposable pawns."

Mōri Motonari is a character introduced in Sengoku BASARA, and is first playable in the following installment. He is depicted as a young, genius daimyo who only cares about winning.

He returns in Sengoku BASARA 3, allied with Ishida Mitsunari against the Tokugawa Army. Though he is at bad blood with the Chōsokabe, Motonari convinces Motochika to join the Toyotomi loyalists to fight the Tokugawa.

Motonari will use any strategies that can lead him to victory, including those that sacrifice his soldiers, without any hesitation. To reflect this personality, his attacks in the game can also hit his own allies, though no actual damage is dealt. Motonari also has a belief in the Sun (which he calls 日輪 Nichirin), and he tends to refer to himself as 日輪の申し子 "Child of the Sun". He has a fierce rivalry with Chōsokabe Motochika of Shikoku, whose personality is the opposite of him.

In the first Sengoku BASARA, Motonari was a non-playable character so he was given a war baton as a weapon with a modified moveset of Imagawa Yoshimoto and Uesugi Kenshin. When he becomes a playable character in Sengoku BASARA 2, his weapon is changed to a ring blade which can be split into two.

  • Last Eidolon - Motonari's basic weapon.
  • Quantum Mirage - 5% chance of extra light based attack damage.
  • Gravity Rainbow - BASARA gauge fills quicker than normal.
  • Celestial Havoc

Role in Games[]

Sengoku BASARA 3[]

Following the death of Hideyoshi Totoyomi, the country fell into chaos. In both the red and blue paths, Motonari fights for the Western Army. The red path has Motonari assisting in the final battle against Ieyasu Tokugawa. He arrives in time to see both Ieyasu and Otani Yoshitsugu badly beaten. Yoshitsugu was glad to see Motonari arrive, but the latter calls the former pitiful. This angers Ieyasu, who stands up and ask how Motonari could turn on his "friend". After beating Ieyasu, Mori relishes in the fact that order has come to Shikoku. Yoshitsugu recovers slightly to put a curse on Motonari before dying. However, the sunlight appears and removes Yoshitsugu's magic off Motonari.

The blue path plays out very differently. Motonari's first move was to have a ceasefire with rival Motochika Chosokabe. He did so by writing a letter that pinpoints Ieyasu responsible for the attack on Shikoku. Yoshitsugu was pleased with Motonari's move to turn Motochika against Ieyasu, stating that Kuroda Kanbei was the actual culprit behind the attack. Motonari warned Yoshitsugu that his mouth could lead to his death, but the latter assures Mori that he would be fine. Motonari then sets forth to conquer the north. One of his opponents was Mogami Yoshiaki, who was willing to split the country between the both of them. But Motonari refused and Yoshiaki died in the battle with Mori. As the campaign progresses, Mitsunari and Yoshitsugu try to request reinforcements from Motonari on two occasions. Motonari praises Yoshitsugu for realising that reinforcements will help in defeating Tachibana Muneshige and Shimazu Yoshihiro. However, he refuses to carry out both requests, the first by being too busy and the second by saying he's fallen ill. The first refusal angers Mitsunari slightly, but Yoshitsugu see that Motonari probably was too busy from the northern campaign. The second time angers the two of them, with Yoshitsugu wandering what Motonari was up to.

By the time Motonari's campaign was finished, Motochika has slain Ieyasu. Mori uses the opportunity to attack Mitsunari. Yoshitsugu berated Mori for betraying Mitsunari and swore to kill him. Motonari reveals that he had intended to betray Mitsunari from the start, angering Yoshitsugu more. But Otani himself was killed, where Motonari comments that he warned the former about his mouth. When Motonari fought Mitsunari, the latter demanded to know why the former allowed Motochika to carry out his own biddings. Motonari revealed it was all to keep his rival away from him. Realising that Mori has betrayed him, Yoshitsugu AND Motochika, Ishida was more determined to make the strategist pay for his actions. When Mitsunari was knocked to the ground, he realised that Mori had intended to destroy his rival from the start. But he collapses and dies before he could attack Motonari.

News of these events reached Motochika, who was shocked by his rival's actions. As Motonari attacks Motochika's army, both Motochika and his men are angry at Motonari's deception. Before fighting Mori, Motochika calls him out for being disloyal. But Motonari accuses Motochika of doing the same thing, and revealing that it was he and not Tokugawa that was responsible for the attack on Shikoku. Upset and angered, Motochika fights Motonari in one last battle. Defeated, Chosokabe breaks down and gets upset about the deaths of Ieyasu and his own men. He then charges towards Motonari, who responds by slashing Motochika in the chest. Before dying, he realises that everything he did was wrong and falls to the floor. Mori calls him, or himself, "an unlikeable man to the end".

Motonari's uses a Ringblade. He have a regular movement and attack speed. His moveset focus on setting traps. This makes maximizing his potential tricky, but if executed correctly inflicts a good amount of damage. Additionally, his "persistent" skills (those which stay even after Motonari's animation has finished) all have an extra effect when he taunts, giving the player more options to his trap. In Sengoku Basara as an NPC, he uses a Feather Whip and shares a modified moveset to Kenshin.

Prior to Sengoku Basara 3, Motonari could use some "Cheating" attack by placing his Wall skills in the corner or near a solid object, and then swipe the enemies using his Second skill to that direction. It will increase his Hit rate rapidly, but only works against non-hero units.

On late Basara starting from Basara 3, despite of that features of wall skills, being removed, and his "persistent" skills being limited to certain extend, now Motonari have more skills to his arsenal. One of his most important skill is his Spawn Archer skill. As Motonari is pretty much slow in casting most of his skills, this will be a good coverage to prevent him from any unnecessary attack, but be careful when attacking around your archers as they will be killed when you hit them. Other of his useful skill is his Mirror double skills, his 4th skills. This skill actually the same as his Sen no Te - "Hatsu" in Sengoku Basara 2 version. But the difference is, that this mirror double will confuse your opponent between the real Motonari and The Mirror double, allowing you to be unharmed as the enemies focus are driven away to that illusion. And then his Mirror of Light attack, his 7th skills will allow you to "fry" your opponent with the intense heat. It deals lesser damage, but opponent hitted with it will rendered unconscious, but not working against Hero units.

Motonari Basara arts thou, he uses a regular combo attack and then spinning with his Ring blade continuously and then finished the enemies with damaging Ray from the Sun. Its mid-tier Basara attack thou as its not really that good, and not really that bad either.

Historical Information[]

Mōri Motonari

Mōri Motonari (毛利 元就, April 16, 1497–July 6, 1571) was a prominent daimyō in the west Chūgoku region of Japan during the Sengoku period of the 16th century.

Sandwiched between the powerful Amago and Ōuchi clans, Motonari led the clan by carefully balancing actions and diplomacy. Eventually, Motonari succeeded in defeating both and controlled the entire Chūgoku area. In his late years, he crushed the Ōtomo clan of Bungo province.

He had three sons, Mōri Takamoto, Kikkawa Motoharu, and Kobayakawa Takakage, whom he encouraged to work together for the benefit of the Mōri clan. In one instance, he is said to have handed each of his sons an arrow and asked each to snap it. After each snapped his arrow, Motonari produced three arrows and asked his sons to snap all three at once. When they were unable to do so (according to a legend still taught today), Motonari explained that one arrow could be broken easily, but three arrows held together could not.

Mori Motonari died in 1571 at Yoshida-Koriyama Castle at age 74. The cause of death is said be a combination of esophageal cancer and old age.

  • So far, Motonari has the most number of elemental weapons, having a total of four elemental weapons. In addition to the 2 "default" elemental weapons, his joke weapon and his last weapon are also elemental.
  • By targeting his barrier with his solar ray, in Sengoku Basara 3, you can reflect the ray and get more hits.
  • Motonari has the fastest/shorten taunt among all playable characters. This makes taunting less risky compared to other characters.
  • Motonari is one of the two characters who can attack allies by default (the other one being Akechi Mitsuhide). This feature is removed in Sengoku Basara 3 and above, but this skills only affect his units on his Spawned archer super skills.
