Matsunaga Hisahide first appears as the only non-playable character in Sengoku BASARA 2 Heroes. While absent in Sengoku BASARA Samurai Heroes, he is added in Sengoku BASARA 3 Utage as a new playable character. He is famous for defying Oda Nobunaga's ambition.

Matsunaga is a tall, middle-aged man with black hair with grey stripes in the style of a samurai ponytail, and sports a unique style of facial hair only covering the sides of his cheeks. He wears black and yellow light samurai armor, with an asymmetrical black and white long coat on top. He's also always seen carrying a katana on the left side of his hip, though he doesn't actually use it in battle. Considering his nature, it could be a precious treasure or heirloom of sorts.

A charismatic man, Matsunaga is able to both charm and belittle those he is speaking to. Always calm and detached, he doesn't believe in things such as love and feels that strength is all that matters. He is considered to be a cold man willing to use any cheap and dirty tactic to obtain what he wants, as a result to this he has no loyal followers who would willingly die in battle for him like many other generals, instead his entire army is heavily paid and tamed by money. He is fascinated by what he feels are priceless treasures, regardless of their true monetary value.

Not much is known about Matsunaga's background, other than that he once fought against the Oda clan, and somehow lived to tell the tale. He is the only man to have fought Oda Nobunaga and survived, it is however unknown whether this was because he was strong enough to match Nobunaga's strength, or if Nobunaga simply let him live, Nobunaga himself however states he let Matsunaga live because he finds him "interesting".

In Katakura Kojūrō's Sengoku BASARA 2 Heroes story, Matsunaga attacks the Date Army, and holds several of their men hostage. Facing Date Masamune, he promises to let the men go if Masamune relinquishes his treasured six swords. Due to his love for his army, Masamune agrees, only for Matsunaga to blow up the cliffside in his face. With Masamune injured, Kojūrō is forced to make the army retreat, narrowly avoiding the Takeda army, who notice Masamune's wounded state.

As soon as his lord is safely back in Oshuu, Kojūrō seeks to track Matsunaga and recover the six swords. Though he faces obstacles such as Fūma Kotarō and the Miyoshi Trio, he eventually succeeds and corners Matsunaga in his castle. There, the two men fight, and Matsunaga is defeated.

In Maeda Keiji's story, Matsunaga is the leader of the Miyoshi Trio that ransacks a small village, which Keiji and his best friend Toyotomi Hideyoshi defend. Recognizing that they need to cut off the source of the conflict, Hideyoshi leaves to perform recon on Matsunaga.

However, when he is captured and held hostage by a belittling Matsunaga, Keiji runs to his best friend's aid. Keiji fights Matsunaga, who taunts both friends during the stage, humiliating them by pointing out their weaknesses, and Keiji is unable to decisively defeat him. Matsunaga slips away, and while Keiji succeeds in rescuing Hideyoshi, he finds that Hideyoshi has murdered all of those present. This is the beginning of the man's ruthlessness and quest for power.

Matsunaga debuts as a playable character in Sengoku BASARA 3 Utage.

He has his own story mode, as well as a role in the storymodes of both Katakura Kojūrō and Tenkai. It is revealed that Matsunaga was the one who made Akechi Mitsuhide cast aside his identity and take on the role of Tenkai. It is possible for his stage to appear randomly in Unification Mode.

In Utage, his story begins during the events of Sekigahara, when his precious teacup "Tsukumo Nasu" got broken. He intruded several battles including Sekigahara itself, trying to find another treasure as replacement. After Nobunaga's reappearance, Hisahide decided to hold a tea ceremony with him again. But due to the lack of his Tsukumo Nasu, Hisahide wanted to use Nobunaga's skull as the teacup. As Nobunaga guarded his wounded neck in pain, Hisahide realized Nobunaga's soul is different from what it once was, and such empty vessel is no longer worthy to be called a treasure. He than blew up Nobunaga's corpse, and went on to find another treasure.

Matsunaga fights with a deadly combination of a chinese sword and gunpowder. He is one of the fastest character in the game, fast in recovery speed and fast-paced evasive skills, more precisely. He is slow in terms of attack speed, but good knowledge and combination from each of his moves will make him one of the most powerful character in the game.

Matsunaga's S-String consist of normal 8 hit attack, with finisher of gunpowder spreading and explosives burst as shown when he was still a Non-playable character in Sengoku Basara 2 Heroes. And his First featured skills is an upgradeable version of his normal S-string, by adding some gunpowder spreading attack. Similar to Otani cursed mark, Matsunaga's gunpowder also take an almost same role. Any enemies covered in his gunpowder will take more hits and damage from fire attack, but only fire attack from him thou (put an example, if you use Sanada Yukimura tag teamed with Matsunaga, and attack a same opponent covered with gunpowder with fire element, the gunpowder effect on Yukimura's fire doesn't occur. His main battle style can be defined like "Gunpowder - Actual skills". Remember, every of his skills (Unless Koshukei, Homurai and Bakuhatsu) will have an initial gunpowder spread attack, this is probably annoying, as its very slow and its uncancellable. So there is a simple alternate to use this. Either by using his Gouka by cancelling it before he snaps his finger to summon his explosive waves, or by using Jump+Special attack (Jump + Triangle in default button mode), as its the 2 fast attack which adds Gunpowder effect, it would allow you to use a follow-up skills without the need of spreading initial gunpowder again (for example, using Jump + Triangle attack and then using Shouka will result in direct Flame Hurricane summoning, without initial Gunpowder spreading like when you used Shouka regularly).

For Kayaku no Senpu case, its spreading gunpowder too, but it cannot be cancelled using normal means like explained above. However you can cancel this skills by using evasive movement in the middle of gunpowder spreading, and the explosion still occur.

Matsunaga's Basara art, consist of 7 slow hit with high impact rate while slowly walking forward. After that, he moves in high speed in 3 directions while slashing forward, rendering the enemies unconscious when successfully hit. before summoning a great wave of explosions behind him. The enemies in the front of him would not be affected by the explosions.

  • 劫火 Gouka (Massive Conflagration) Matsunaga sharply swings his sword on the ground, and then the three fire waves disperse from him (five, if Homurai is active)
  • 昇華 Shouka (Sublimation) He makes a sharp circular sweep with his left hand, scattering gunpowder all around him in a shape of a snake, then cuts out the spark with a sword, and the flame passes around him, and then stops in front of him and continues to burn for quite a long time. Moreover, if the enemy got into this flame, it`s not so easy to escape from it.
  • 焔界 Homurai (Blaze Border) Matsunaga dispels a cloud of gunpowder, then snaps his fingers, making all around him explodes, and then there appear bright scarlet flames all around. It still continue to burn for some time. During this time the power of simple attacks increases, the explosions and fire takes a lot more damage.
  • 爆発 Bakuhatsu (Blast) Matsunaga snaps his fingers triggering the soil at different distances, giving rise to large stalagmites toward the enemy, throwing him/her into the air. If used from a distance this attack force enemies to fall near Matsunaga, probably to make it short bouts. If used near you, throw them away, forcing them to move away.

Historical information[]

Matsunaga Hisahide

Matsunaga Hisahide (松永 久秀 1510 – November 19, 1577) was a daimyo of Japan following the Sengoku period of the 16th century.

A companion of Miyoshi Chokei, he was a retainer of Miyoshi Masanaga from the 1540s. He directed the conquest of the province of Yamato in the 1560s and by 1564 had built a sufficient power-base to be effectively independent. It is believed that he was conspiring against Chokei during this period, from 1561 to 1563 three of Chokei's brothers and his son Yoshioki died. This left Miyoshi Yoshitsugu the adopted heir when Chokei died in 1564, too young to rule. Three men shared his guardianship - Miyoshi Nagayuki, Miyoshi Masayasu, and Iwanari Tomomichi.

In 1565, the guardians and Hisahide worked together and dispatched an army to capture Ashikaga Yoshiteru, the shogun, who was then either murdered or forced to commit suicide. His brother Ashikaga Yoshiaki fled and the shogun was replaced by his young cousin, Yoshihide.

In 1566, fighting started between Hisahide and the Miyoshi. Initially the forces of Matsunaga were unsuccessful and his apparent destruction of the Buddhist Tōdai-ji in Nara was considered an act of infamy.

In 1568 Oda Nobunaga, with the figurehead Yoshiaki, attacked Hisahide. Nobunaga captured Kyoto in November and Hisahide was forced to surrender. Yoshiaki was made shogun, a post he held only until 1573 when he attempted to remove himself from Nobunaga's power. Hisahide kept control of the Yamato and served Nobunaga in his extended campaigns against the Miyoshi and others, for a while. In 1573 Hisahide briefly allied with the Miyoshi, but when the hope for successes were not achieved he returned to Nobunaga to fight the Miyoshi. In 1577 he split with Nobunaga again, this time Nobunaga turned on him and besieged him at Shigisan Castle. At age 67, defeated but defiant, Hisahide committed suicide and ordered his head destroyed to prevent it from becoming a trophy (in which his son, Matsunaga Kojiro grabbed Hisahide's head and jumped off the castle wall with his sword through his throat) and also destroyed a priceless tea kettle (Hiragumo) that Nobunaga coveted before he died. His son, Hisamichi, also committed suicide in siege.

Hisahide often appears as a shriveled and scheming old man in fiction. However, this is a fictitious image from his assassinations and the possible destruction of Todai-ji. In truth, he was a tall, handsome, and educated man as well as a patron of arts.
