"I, Tokugawa Ieyasu! With the power of bonds shall control the land!"

Tokugawa Ieyasu is a young man who believes in bonds and seeks to use their power to unite the whole territory of Japan, and in turn bring peace. He has made an appearance in all Sengoku BASARA titles to date, making his first playable debut in Sengoku BASARA 2 Heroes as a young child wielding a spear. Since Sengoku BASARA 3, Ieyasu has grown into a feisty yet respectful young man, opting instead for the use of his fists in battle.

Role

Sb-tokugawa-ieyasu-cg

Takechiyo (Young Ieyasu)

Tokugawa Ieyasu is a character who had his first major role in Sengoku BASARA 3. In Sengoku BASARA 2 Heroes, Tokugawa Ieyasu along with his loyal general Honda Tadakatsu by his side, sought to conquer the land. However, due to him being a child he wasn't taken seriously by the other warlords. Ieyasu wound up fighting in Oda Nobunaga's army, as the Oda were intimidated by Tadakatsu's strength (but he reneges on the alliance and rebels against Oda. But he rebels and was apparently killed by Mitsuhide in the anime). After Nobunaga was killed by Akechi Mitsuhide and Mitsuhide was killed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the latter began conquering the land. Ieyasu surrendered to Hideyoshi and became one of his generals. Eventually, after seeing Hideyoshi's lust for power, Ieyasu rebels against him and kills him, sparking off the events of Sengoku BASARA 3.

Ieyasu is now a young man with great physique and fighting skills. He leads the Eastern Army against Ishida Mitsunari, who hates him because of his betrayal, which resulted in Hideyoshi's death. Ieyasu wishes to unite the country through his own means. Many of his paths are dedicated to seeking out allies to assist him in fighting the Western Army.

Ieyasu is often referred to by older generals by his childhood name "Takechiyo", even after his appearance is updated.

In the fourth game, Ieyasu is having conflicts with himself after leaving the Toyotomi to conquer the land himself. Despite leaving the army to pursue his goal to unite the country with the power of bonds, Ieyasu finds that he himself can't avoid the violence of war and begins wondering how he's any different from Toyotomi Hideyoshi or why he left in the first place.

In his drama route, Ieyasu runs into Keiji, who asks for Ieyasu to call him when he thinks of wanting to confront Hideyoshi himself. When Ieyasu finds out later on that Matsunaga Hisahide is having a battle with Hideyoshi under the Ashikaga forces, Ieyasu decides that he doesn't have the time to find Keiji and heads directly to the battlefield. Once he reaches there, he finds himself being questioned by both Takenaka Hanbei and Hideyoshi about his new ideals and his drive to oppose their doctrine of strength, with Ieyasu struggling to give them a straight answer. Keiji eventually reaches the battlefield himself, angered at Ieyasu for not telling him about opposing Hideyoshi and Hisahide. Hideyoshi eventually defeats Hisahide and is holding him in the air, but Hisahide causes a massive explosion that kills both him and Hideyoshi, leaving Keiji distraught and Ieyasu disturbed at what just unfolded.

Ieyasu heads to Sekigahara to tell Mitsunari the news of what has happened, but Ōtani Yoshitsugu has already wrongly reported to him that it was Ieyasu who killed Hideyoshi. Despite this, Mitsunari gives Ieyasu the benefit of a doubt when they meet and asks him personally if he killed his lord. Ieyasu, knowing that Matsunaga is dead and Mitsunari's reason for living died with him, lies and says that he did kill him, only because he was in the way of him conquering the country. This sends Mitsunari into an absolute rage and they do battle, with Ieyasu disarming him and flying off on Tadakatsu. His last words to himself as he's flying are "Hate me...and live on", referring to Mitsunari.

In The Last Party, he tried to recruit several factions in his Eastern Army, some accepted, some declined. He decided to go to Sekigahara to play with Kobayakawa Hideaki's trap.

Weapons

Before Sengoku BASARA 3, Ieyasu wields a double-bladed spear with a circular blade on the upper pike and fights in the similar style of Maeda Toshiie. In Sengoku BASARA 3, his story depicts him to have discarded his weapon and fights with just his fists, enhanced with brass knuckles. Using his fists, his new fighting style heavily resembles Roberto Frois, a character from Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams.

  • Bond Bracers - Ieyasu's basic weapon.
  • Spike Smashers - 5% chance of extra light based attack damage.
  • Demon Crushers - BASARA gauge fills quicker than normal.
  • Zen Gauntlets - 10% chance of extra light based attack damage.

Gameplay

In Sengoku BASARA 2 HEROES, he fights like Toshiie, but with different skills. His BASARA attacks is also similar to Tadakatsu's, which isn't surprising as it involves calling him.

Beginning in Sengoku BASARA 3, he uses knuckles like Hideyoshi. However, unlike Hideyoshi who focuses on grab moves, Ieyasu does not have any grabs. Instead, Ieyasu focuses on charging up his fists to deliver stronger blows. His entire S-String and some of his skills can be charged to have a stronger effect. However, charging takes around a second and usually leaves Ieyasu vulnerable during that time.

During Sengoku BASARA 3, his moves are pretty much restricted, as he is unable to cancel most of his moves to one another, allowing him to use only one attack until its finisher and this leaves him wide open during his recovery. As well as his R1+D-button Evasive moves that cannot be used continuously with fast pace. However, in Sengoku Basara 3 UTAGE, his moveset have been fixed and now he can use a follow-up attack on all of his skills, and he can use a decent ground to air to ground attack effectively like other characters.

He also has a "hood mode" where he puts up his hood. This is triggered normally by taunting and also lasts for a short time. While in this mode, the charge time for attacks are decreased.

His personal item in Sengoku BASARA 2 HEROES is similar to Tadakatsu's (lightning effect on cannon skill), while in Sengoku BASARA 3, it enables his hood mode for the entire battle.

In Sengoku BASARA 2 Heroes, Tokugawa Ieyasu Basara art pretty much similar to Honda Tadakatsu, that is launching a deadly explosive beam from the land around him that deals massive damage.

In Sengoku BASARA 3 and above, Ieyasu's Basara consist of 6 Hit combo attack with charging skills, and Quick multi hit and then ended up with Tendouzuki super skills as the finisher. Take notes that if you charge his Tendouzuki before activating his BASARA, you can release another follow up Tendouzuki attack up to 3 times.

Тokugawa Ieyasu

Тokugawa Ieyasu

徳川家康 January 31, 1543 – June 1, 1616

was the eventual unifier of the Sengoku era, he was known for his patience. Originally named Matsudaira Takechiyo, Tokugawa was born in Okazaki Castle in Mikawa on January 31, 1543. He was the son of Matsudaira Hirotada , the daimyo of Mikawa of the Matsudaira clan, and Odainokata, the daughter of a neighboring samurai lord Mizuno Tadamasa.

The Matsudaira family was split in 1550: one side wanted to be vassals of the Imagawa clan, while the other side preferred the Oda. As a result, much of Ieyasu's early years were spent in danger as wars with the Oda and Imagawa clans were fought. Ieyasu's father, Hirotada, favored the Imagawa clan.

In 1548, when the Oda clan invaded Mikawa, Hirotada turned to Imagawa Yoshimoto, the head of the Imagawa clan, for help to repel the invaders. Yoshimoto agreed to help under the condition that Hirotada send his son Ieyasu (Takechiyo) to Sunpu as a hostage. Hirotada agreed. Oda Nobuhide, the leader of the Oda clan, learned of this arrangement and had Ieyasu abducted from his entourage en route to Sumpu. Ieyasu was just six years old at the time.

Nobuhide threatened to execute Ieyasu unless his father severed all ties with the Imagawa clan. Hirotada replied that sacrificing his own son would show his seriousness in his pact with the Imagawa clan. Despite this refusal, Nobuhide chose not to kill Ieyasu but instead held him for the next three years at the Manshoji Temple in Nagoya.

In 1549, when Ieyasu was 7, his father Hirotada died of natural causes. At about the same time, Oda Nobuhide died during an epidemic. The deaths dealt a heavy blow to the Oda clan. An army under the command of Imagawa Sessai laid siege to the castle where Oda Nobuhiro, Nobuhide's eldest son and the new head of the Oda, was living. With the castle about to fall, Imagawa Sessai offered a deal to Oda Nobunaga (Oda Nobuhide's second son). Sessai offered to give up the siege if Ieyasu was handed over to the Imagawa clan. Nobunaga agreed and so Ieyasu (now nine) was taken as a hostage to Sumpu. Here he lived a fairly good life as hostage and potentially useful future ally of the Imagawa clan until 1556 when he was age 15. In 1556, Ieyasu came of age, and, following tradition, changed his name to Matsudaira Jirōsaburō Motonobu (松平 次郎三郎 元信). One year later, at the age of 16 (according to East Asian age reckoning), he married his first wife and changed his name again to Matsudaira Kurandonosuke Motoyasu. After Oda Nobunaga destroyed the Imagawa clan in the Battle of Okehazama, Motoyasu declared independence from the Imagawa and slowly built his clan. He later changed his name into 'Tokugawa Ieyasu'.

He allied with Nobunaga and became a resourceful ally, helping him defeat the Azai-Asakura clan in the Battle of Anegawa, and later the Takeda clan in the Battle of Nagashino. After hearing the news of Nobunaga's death, Ieyasu had to undertake a perilous journey crossing the land of Iga, but he returned to his land safely and tried to avenge Nobunaga's death, but he was too late; Nobunaga's general Hashiba Hideyoshi (later Toyotomi Hideyoshi) has defeated Nobunaga's killer Akechi Mitsuhide first.

For the latter years, Ieyasu was involved in several skirmishes with Hideyoshi, culminating in the Battle of Komaki and Battle of Nagakute, which Hideyoshi taking control of most of Japan but leaving Ieyasu in control of the eight Kantō provinces. This set Ieyasu up as the second most powerful man in the country and then the most powerful when Hideyoshi died.

Many generals wanted to promote Ieyasu to be the next Shogun, but several factions tried instead defended rights of Hideyoshi's son, Toyotomi Hideyori, to become the next Shogun. This eventually results the Battle of Sekigahara in which Ieyasu, despite heavy losses at the beginning of the battle was able to turn the table by exploiting a betrayal in the opposing side, bringing forward victory and establishing his own Shogunate.

In 1616, Ieyasu died at age 73. The cause of death is thought to have been cancer or syphilis. The first Tokugawa shogun was posthumously deified with the name Tōshō Daigongen (東照大権現), the "Great Gongen, Light of the East". (A Gongen is believed to be a buddha who has appeared on Earth in the shape of a kami to save sentient beings). In life, Ieyasu had expressed the wish to be deified after his death in order to protect his descendants from evil.
