Uesugi Crest

The Uesugi clan (上杉氏 Uesugi-shi) is a faction in the Sengoku BASARA series. It is based in Echigo province and is lead by Uesugi Kenshin.

The Uesugi army is primarily composed of basic warriors- ashigaru and samurai, wielding both swords and spears- with their strength coming from Kenshin's skill in guiding formations. The Uesugi army also has a ninja corps, named the Nokizaru (軒猿, Nokizaru; lit. "Eaves Monkey") in Sengoku BASARA 3. The Uesugi ninja are known to be lead by Kasuga. It is not known what special role, if any, the Nokizaru have that most ninja troops in Sengoku BASARA don't. However, historically, the Nokizaru ninja clan was said to have aided Kenshin by acting as scouts, hiding in trees and upon roofs to detect and warn of encroaching enemies.

The Uesugi army also has a special ops unit called the Snow Troupe (遊撃部隊「雪組, Yugeki Butai "Yuki Gumi"; lit. Special Raid Unit "Snow Troupe"). It is made up of monks who wear similar clothing to Kenshin and speak in song. Much like Kenshin they are based upon Takarazuka theatre, evident due to their name (being shared by a Takarazuka troupe), graceful movements, and singing. In the English translation of Sengoku BASARA: Samurai Heroes, the Snow Troupe members are simply known as Snowfall. The Snow Troupe first appeared in Sengoku BASARA 2 Heroes as one of Kenshin's last lines of defense at Tetorigawa, and continued to show up in a similar role in subsequent main titles of the series, indicating a certain level of trust Kenshin places upon them.
