~The Heavens whisper to take up arms...~

Uesugi Kenshin is a powerful warrior and character in the Sengoku BASARA series.

This character perfectly embodies the nickname given to them: they are an extremely fast and powerful warrior, and a cunning tactician. Kenshin's historical rivalry with Takeda Shingen was preserved in the game: Kenshin considers him as their fated rival, and the man that gives them the highest thrill in battle. Their attitude and words towards Shingen at times leave strong suspicions of an interest bordering on romantic affection, but this is possibly caused by Kenshin's flowery and somewhat effeminate speech. In fact, a great influence upon the creation of this character is the Takarazuka Revue theater company, and particularly the type of actresses portraying male roles. Kenshin might appear androgynous and effeminate, speak in soft and courteous tones, but they aren't someone to be taken lightly. In the game itself they are quite feared by other characters, and always considered a superb match. Along with the aforementioned Shingen and Shimazu Yoshihiro, Kenshin is probably the best commander in the cast, storyline-wise, and along with Shingen is second only to Ashikaga Yoshiteru in combat ability. They are also a fervent believer of Buddhism, especially the God of War Bishamonten (they are even referred to as "Avatar of Bishamonten" sometimes), and stands in defense of commoners when they are attacked by other samurai.

Kenshin's relationship with the kunoichi Kasuga reflects a trope in Takarazuka theater, the affectionate rapport between upper and underclassman. While she more or less overtly displays her affection for them, they treat her with care, kindness, and respect, but with a pretense of cool detachment. Their care for her is enough to be noted by Keiji as a sort of love, and is to the extent to have used themselves as a human shield multiple times throughout the series to defend her. They become furious in the games when she is defeated or slain by the player character, and urge her to not put herself in harm's way if she appears to be in danger. They also consider Kasuga's opinion when she offers it, and rely on her as a messenger, spy and scout.

They also have a friendly relationship with Maeda Keiji, and offers him a home in the third game. In Sengoku BASARA 4, Kenshin is one of Yoshiteru's chief generals, believing that the land needs Yoshiteru's strength and aids the shogun in determining if any warrior in the land is worthy of replacing Yoshiteru as ruler. In Sumeragi, Kenshin can even challenge Yoshiteru themselves at the behest of Kasuga and Keiji due to having not only strength but a benevolence and understanding for the common folk, in spite of Kenshin's self-doubt in being able to connect with them.

They are an NPC in Sengoku BASARA 3 and Sengoku BASARA 4; but can be unlocked as an ally in the third game after being defeated in Sanada Yukimura's story mode.

Uesugi Kenshin

Historical information[]

Uesugi Kenshin 上杉謙信 February 18, 1530 – April 19, 1578 Uesugi was born with the name Nagao Kagetora in the family of Uesugi’s vassal in the province of Echigo. He always respected and admired his main rival Takeda Shingen. They confronted each other in Kawanakajima 5 times. Between these confrontations Kagetora managed to visit the capital and famous religious and historical places which raised his reputation of a well educated person. After this tour he became a Buddhist monk and changed his name to Kenshin. Uesugi was one of the most outstanding people of his time. Talented warrior, he was in his element at the battlefield, but at the same time he loved studying, wrote poetry and had a good sense of humor. Kenshin never got married and had no children. After death of Takeda and Houjou, Kenshin started thinking about expansion and opposed Oda Nobunaga. They fought only one battle, and Kenshin, who acquired experience in his rivalry with Takeda, had no difficulty in defeating Oda. Nobunaga had to retreat. The second battle never took place as Kenshin died in his castle at the age of 48 (the reason was unclear – stomach cancer, alcohol abuse or a strike from shinobi). When he learned about Kenshin’s death, Nobunaga said: "Now the empire is mine".

  • Kenshin uses a similar Iaido style to that of Vergil, as seen in Devil May Cry 3.
  • Kenshi's exact gender, as stated in an interview, is not truly stated. It is speculated that Kenshin is a man, however the creator states that Kenshin's exact gender is unknown. This follows historical rumors that Keshin was a woman disguising herself as a man. This approach was developed in the stage plays, where Kenshin was played by an androgynous-looking woman, although the character was still perceived as a feminine man. In the original Japanese of the games and anime adaptations, Kenshin is voiced by a woman to give the character a more feminine tone which seemingly implies that Kenshin's gender is female; whereas in the English dubs of both the games and adaptations, Kenshin is voiced by a man (a different one for each medium) to give the character a more masculine-sounding voice which seemingly implies Kenshin is male.
